Bio
Orvis was born April 15, 1923, in Monroe, Iowa, to Reese and Amber Boat Wood. He was a corrections officer for the state of Illinois for 33 years, retiring in 1983. During his earlier years, he owned and operated a gas station in Ainsworth, Iowa. He also worked at John Deere Harvester in the 1960"s. He married Grace Fitzgerald June of 1946, in East Moline. He was a World War II Army veteran. He was a Master Mason, 33rd Degree Consistory and a Shriner. Orvis was a Past Worthy Patron of the The Eastern Star, Elsie Chapter, Port Byron. He enjoyed six months winter vacationing in Yuma, Ariz., every year. He is survived by his son, Wade A. (Nancy) Wood, Oceanside, Calif.; granddaughters, Nancy Long and Patricia (Edward) Rodriquez, both of East Moline, Carol (Pete) Kyles, Colona, Kathy Hilligoss, East Moline, Sally (Dennis) Ringstaff, Van Buren, Mo., Terry Hilligoss, Olympia, Wash., John David Wood, Sydney, Australia, Robbie Wood, Hemet, Calif.; a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and very special friend, Clara Tinker. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Grace; daughters, Janet Hilligoss and Roberta Davis.
