John P. Placek, passed away, October 17, 2009, at home in Loup City Nebraska. John was born the third of seven children to Stanley and Vera (Leas) Placek on November 11, 1926, on a farm north of Loup City in Sherman County Nebraska. John grew up north of Loup City in the Oak Creek Community. He attended school at District 48 and 31. He graduated from Loup City, Nebraska High School in 1943 at the age of 16. John entered the Army in February 1945 and served until October 1946. He then farmed in the Austin Community of Sherman County, Nebraska with his father and brother Edward. On June 22, 1953, he married Althadene Grudzinski at St. Josaphat's Catholic Church in Loup City. John and Dene farmed for 50 years at Austin and raised their four daughters there. The girls helped their dad farm until they went to college. John served nine years on the FSA Committee and over 20 years as community committeeman. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post No. 48. He also belonged to St. Mary's Catholic Church in Rockville, Nebraska for 50 years and St. Josaphat's Catholic Church in Loup City, Nebraska for six years. John loved farming. Above all, he loved being home with his family. His only hobby was playing pitch with his daughters, grandchildren and friends. Survivors are: wife, of 56 years, Althadene "Dene" Placek of Loup City, Nebraska; daughters and sons-in-law, Dr. Debra Placek of Lincoln, Nebraska, Christine Jester of Cheyenne, Wyoming; Jeanne and Steve Scheneman of Cheyenne, Wyoming and Susan and Johnny Williams of Skiatook, Oklahoma; sisters, Marie Hoult, Francis Panowicz and Florence Duester; and brother and sister-in-law, Alfred and Dixie Placek and a host of friends and relatives. Interment was in the Evergreen Cemetery, St. Paul, NE. John was welcomed into The Heavenly Home by: parents, Stanley and Vera Placek; brother, Edward Placek; and sister, Stella Schimonitz Smith.
