Son of Reuben Raines and his wife Nancy Powell. Harvey was known to have married four times. His first marriage was to Ella Oldham in Warren county, Illinois on 16 May 1875. Harvey filed for divorce on the grounds of desertion on 19 November 1879, listing his absent wife as Sarah Elnora Raines. Ella married a total of five times, divorcing her first four husbands. Children of the marriage were sons William Taylor Raines and Frank Nestle Raines. Following their divorce, William was adopted by Frank Messenger and his wife Lucy Ann Harris of Monmouth. Ella raised Frank in Burlington, Iowa. Harvey's second wife was Julia Amelia Cummings, born 9 August 1857 in Orion, Henry County, Illinois. Both were residing in Mercer County, Illinois during the 1880 census. Marriage information has not been found, but their first two children were born in North Dakota in 1884 and 1887. Six more children were born to the couple in Monmouth, making for 8 children born in only 11 years of marriage. Julia died 11 August 1895 in Monmouth, two days after the stillbirth of her eighth child. Daughter Goldie was again adopted by Frank Messenger and his wife Lucy Ann Harris. A year later, Harvey married Rebecca T. Martin in Monmouth on 30 September 1896. She was a native of Edmonson county, Kentucky. Rebecca was shown with Harvey in the 1900 US census of Eliot Township, Louisa county, Iowa, with her mother and brother living near by. By 1910, Harvey was listed as "widowed" and living in Henderson county, Illinois, while Rebecca was listed as living in California as "married" - apparently divorced. Although Rebecca was listed as "Miss" on her marriage license, it also stated it was her second marriage. She was the daughter of Isaac Martin and his wife Sarah A. Going. Finally, Harvey married Mrs. Mary Elizabeth (Littlefield) Peterson in Warren County on 7 July 1925. She was the widow of John Black and was Mrs. Mary Carlin when she married George R. Peterson in 1908, a marriage that lasted all of 28 days before ending in divorce. Harvey was listed as a "single" inmate in the Warren County Alms house during the 1930 census, where he died in 1934. Mary has not been found in the 1930 census yet. She died under the name of Black, months after Harvey. Interestingly, Harvey was shown living with brothers John C. Ferrington and William C. Ferrington in the 1925 Iowa census of Burlington. John C. Ferrington was the second husband of Harvey's first wife, Ella Oldham. Also, William C. Ferrington, divorced from his first wife Rebecca Jane Miner, married Harvey's much older mother, Nancy Powell Raines. According to his obituary, Harvey was survived by five of his ten known children: William Taylor Raines of Des Moines, and Frank Nestle Raines of Burlington, Iowa; Wilsey R. Raines of Chicago, Mrs. Goldie Branstrator of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, and Mrs. Nancy Stubbs of Oquawka.
