(*Article copied as printed.) ∼ New Castle Courier, New Castle, IN - September 2, 1921 OBITUARY -------------- James Addison, son of Lewis H. and Nancy Swindell, was born in Guilford county, North Carolina, Oct. 15, 1857, and was the fourth of a family of nine children, four of whom, with the parents, preceded him into the Great Beyond, Mrs. Elizabeth Keck and Mrs. John Cox, of this county and Robert M. and Jesse of Nebraska being the surviving children. In the latter half of the year 1857, the family came overland to Henry county, Indiana, where Mr. Swindell has since resided except a few months spent in Nebraska. On Dec. 23, 1875, he was united in marriage to Jennie N. Watkins, who survives him. Six children were born to this union, two of whom died in early childhood, Mrs. Ola Shelly, Mrs. Mabel Bales, Horace and Mrs. Alma Nutt reside near the home. The subject of this sketch was essentially a farmer from birth until death. He lived on farms except for a few winter months spent in Newcastle. He was a man of ambition and through his life sought its realization and counted no personal cost to great. He was a man whose conception of honor and character were deep and to those who came to know him intimately, he revealed elements of wisdom and strength well worth studying. He encountered hardships which would have defeated a man of less hardihood. In early life he was converted to Christ, but being a man of reticent disposition, he made no demonstration. The hardships through which he later passed dimmed the luster of this joy, but he never charged his hard lot to God and always conceded his indebtedness to Deity. During his last illness, he was not unmindful of man's needs of God's presence and sought his mercies and expressed his confidence in God's goodness. He passed away August 22, 1921, after many months of illness, at the age of 69 years, 10 months and 7 days. - A. L.
