Last Thursday while working on the family homestead in Bow Creek township, John Thomas Karnes, answered the call of the Great Commander to depart across the Silent River to the Land of Perpetual Sunshine. He answered his wall without a murmur and was brave and unflinching. It is a divine decree that all men regardless of rank and position shall sometime sacrifice all and depart by the same route on a journey full of adventure to that region beyond the stars. Clothed in the ermine of a life full of rich experience, and a good name, honestly won by kind deed, Mr. Karnes began this journey with a full assurance of a pleasant voyage and a safe arrival. Peace to his soul. Obituary John Thomas Karens was born in the state of Illinois, January 4, 1841, and departed this life, September 5, 1918, age 77 years, 9 months, and 1 day. In 1866, he was united in marriage to Miss Eliza Ann White, by Elder William L Allen. To this union were born seven children, William H. Karnes of Bernard, Nebraska; Herbert D., John C., and James Edward Karnes, and Mrs. Sarah Anne Dawes of Studley, Kansas; Mrs. Eva I. Long, of Hoxie, Kansas; and Stephen F. Karens, of Heber, Utah. At the early age of seventeen years, he united with the Baptist church and later he united with the Church of Christ of which church he was a faithful member at the time of his death. In 1879, he and his companion moved from Illinois to this county and took up a homestead, where they resided until 1904 when they moved to Hoxie. Here they resided until the death of his wife which occurred July 20, 1914, when he moved back to the farm to be with some of his children. Funeral was held at Bow Creek church, Sunday afternoon, in charge of Rev Griffiths, of Selden, and burial was made in the Bow Creek cemetery. All the children were present at the funeral except W.H., and S.F., who were unable to get here. To Our Dear Father, Dearest father, you have left us And our hearts with grief are stirred, Yet in heaven we hope to meet you Where no fare wells e'er are heard. Though we mourn and miss you, father, Yet our trust in God is strong, For we know what e'er befalls us, Jesus doeth nothing wrong. The Hoxie Sentinel. Kenneth, Kansas · Thursday, September 12, 1918.
