From the archives of Henderson County Historical Commission NEW YORK COMMUNITY--Funeral services for Dennis W. Sholars, 72, were held at 5 p.m. Saturday at the New York Baptist church with the Rev. Ray Billingsley officiating. Burial was in the New York cemetery under direction of Foster and Brown Funeral Home of Athens. Mr. Sholars, a longtime resident of the New York community, died suddenly at 3:10 a.m. Thursday at his home. He was born October 1, 1904 in Louisiana and had resided in the New York community most his life. He was a Deacon in the New York Baptist church and was serving as assistant Sunday School Superintendent at the time of his death. He was also a director in the REA, a member of the Masonic Lodge and a retired rancher. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Sophronia Sholars of the New York community; two daughters, Mrs. Rowena String of Vienna, Va. and Mrs. Marjorie Nakasone of San Diego, Ca.; one brother, Roy Sholars of Larue; two sisters, Mrs. Ida Richardson of the New York community and Mrs. Ethel Collard of Mabank; four step-sons, Thomas Crossley of Shawnee, Ok., James Crossley of Waxahachie, C.H. Crossley of Round Rock and Kenneth Crossley of Conroe; one step-daughter, Mrs. Linden Lewis of Athens; two grandchildren, fifteen step-grandchildren and two step-great grandchildren.
