Graveside services for Henry Franklin Varnell, 83, of Athens, will be Saturday, August 15, 2009, at 3 p.m. at Limestone Memorial Gardens with Joe Teal officiating and McConnell Funeral Home directing. Mr. Varnell, who died Wednesday, August 12, 2009, after an extended stay in Birmingham's Select Specialty Care Hospital, was born October 9, 1925, in Limestone County to Ernest Watson Varnell and Cora Martha Bauer Varnell. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, and brother, Clifford O. Varnell. Corporal Henry F. Varnell served in the U.S. Army Air Forces from 1943 to 1946. During his service, he saw action in the China-Burma-India Theater of operations during World War II. The medals Mr. Varnell received were ATO, APTO, Good Conduct, and World War II Victory. He was most known for his 42 and a half years of service as a letter carrier and rural carrier with the U.S. Postal Service. His unselfish devotion to Athens Little League Baseball as coach and umpire from 1956 to 1976 and served on the city of Athens Zoning Board of Adjustments and Appeals from April 1965 to June 1986. He was a member of the American Legion Post 49, and in good standing continuously for over 60 years. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mae Ruth Wood Varnell; two sons, Dave Varnell and his wife, Candice, of Oxford, MS, and Tom Varnell and his wife, Malanie, of Houston, TX; five daughters, Lynnwood Smith of Athens, Gaylor Basden and her husband, Rickey, of Decatur, Jessica Christopher and her husband, George, of Lester, Mot Varnell of Madison, MS, and Kelly Varnell of Danville; sister, Gladis Ernestine Clark of Arlington, VA; 12 grandchildren, Jeri Ann Clark, Anne-Marie Varnell, Wendy Basden, Scott Smith, Wes Christopher, Dallas Shea Smith, Carissa Shillito, Audria Frattini, Elizabeth Bullen, Neil Christopher, Paul Varnell and Will Varnell; and four great-grandchildren, Hannah Frattini, Noah Frattini, Simon Shillito and Louis Shillito.
