Obituary of Chesley Martin , "Hopewell Township News" Since our last communication death has smitten one of our best citizens to the ground. Mr. Chesley Martin is no more. He died on the 12th inst, in the sixty sixth year of his age. He was a humble retired and unassuming but, nevertheless, great man. In him centered those characteristics which constitute the true gentleman and upright citizen. A perfect paragon of honesty, veracity and firmness was he. Strange to say, he died without an enemy. He conducted his business on a strictly cash system, ever living within that moral injunction, "Owe no man anything, but to love him." On the day following his death, his remains were followed by a long train of afflicted friends to Hopewell Church, where the last honors were paid them. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. F.G. Carpenter in a sermon well adapted to the occasion. He was then interred beside his wife who had preceded him four years. While we cease to call his name, let us cherish his many virtues. Sept. 20, 1877.
