William Riley Mead was born in Franklin Township, Washington Co, Indiana, in 1837, and is the 4th child of John Newland Mead and Lucinda V Moore Mead. WR Mead married Malinda "Linnie" Clipp at New Albany, Indiana, on 12 June 1866. Occupation: Farmer. WR Mead was a Captain and served in the Civil War Co C 23 Indiana Volunteer Infantry, Union. He served four years, 3 months and 27 days. He was in 49 battles and 100 skirmishes and never received a wound. He lead the "forlorn hope" at Vicksburg; went into the charge with 54 men and came out with only 16. He enlisted 27 July 1861 and mustered out 23 July 1865.
