Bio

In June 1899, Mrs. L. E. Thomas applied for a Confederate pension through husband J. E. Thomas, Application # 03655, Shelby County, Texas, stating that she was very feeble. Her husband, Jefferson E. "Jeff" Thomas, age 33, enlisted at Shelbyville, Texas, on April 2, 1862, as a Private, Company A, 28th Regiment (Randal's), Texas Cavalry, CSA. In November 1862, he was absent sick, and was given sick furlough from Pine Bluff, Arkansas, to Shelby County, Texas, in early 1863. In 1880 L. E. Thomas, 40 (b. AL), and her daughters Lizzie, 16 (b. TX), and Lou, 13 (b. TX), were living with L. E.'s widowed mother Mary McCary, 68 (b. KY). Ten years earlier, in 1870 W. L. McCary, 64 (b. SC), and his wife Mary, 58 (b. KY), are listed with Thomas Linsa, 28 (b. AL); William W., 20 (b. AL); Enous H, 17 (b. TN) and Hass William, 17 (B. AL); John, 13 (b. AL); Mary T., 9 (b. TX); Lizza, 8 (b. TX); and Louisa, 4 (b. TX). By 1900 the widowed L. E. Thomas, 63 (b. AL), was living with daughter M. [Mariah] E., 37 (b. TX), and son-in-law Ben Pounds, 52. Sources: 1870, 1880, 1900, 1920 federal censuses, Shelby Co, TX.
