Joseph McCary served in the 11th Texas Infantry, Roberts' Regiment, Company H. Company H is made up of about 105 men from Shelby County, Texas, including Joseph's brother, John Wesley McCary. Company H was stationed at Camp Clough in Tyler during the summer of 1862. Colonel OM Roberts wrote that the camp was located about 3-miles east of [downtown] Tyler. That would be about where the loop is today. There was much sickness at the camp and most noteably a measles outbreak. Many of the deceased soldiers were buried in a mass gravesite at the historic Oakwood Cemetery in Tyler and it is possible that Joseph was also. However, he may have been transported back to Shelby County for burial, similar to Jessie Mathis that died of measles in Tyler but is buried at the Mt. Zion Cemetery in Shelby County.
