Private, Company H (also called Company D), 11th Texas Infantry, Roberts' Regiment, CSA. John Wesley McCary, son of William Littlepage and Mary Worsham McCary, was enlisted by O. M. Roberts on February 19, 1862, at Tatum's House near Cedar Yard in Shelby County, Texas, along with about 104 other Shelby County men. On that day Jesse Amason was appointed Captain of the Company. On about March 5, 1862, the soldiers struck a line of march to Navasota, Texas, where they boarded a train to Camp Lubbock near Houston. After a few months in Houston, the men were ordered to Camp Clough in Tyler, Texas. All the time, they were adding recruits to replace the deceased and medically discharged. Julia was born in Shelby County and lived there all her life. Their children are Horace D., Justin E., Bessie, Mary, Eva J. (m. Beckham), Dan Y., John W. Jr., Nevada, and Boone.
