Waco Tribune Herald, Thursday, April 24, 1997. ************************** Sophie (Svacina) Berger received a Lay Teacher's Certificate in the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine from the Diocese of Austin, Texas. The certificate states: This is to certify that Mrs. Clarence Berger, having completed the Basic Teacher Training Course of the Diocese of Austin, is hereby declared qualified to discharge the functions of Catechist in the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine in the Diocese of Austin. Given at Austin, Texas this 18th day of May, 1969. Signed by Msgr. Claude A. Faust, Diocesan Director. Sophie taught a large class, preparing them to receive confirmation. Bishop Harris was at St. Eugene's Church to perform the confirmation rites. Normally the bishop asks the confirmants some catechism questions, to assure that they're really prepared. He began by saying, "I don't suppose anyone is really prepared for confirmation rites", to which Sophie stood up and loudly replied, "Oh yes they are". So the Bishop asked his questions and was quite impressed. On April 13, 1969, Sophie received a Certificate of Appreciation for her outstanding and meritorious service to the church and parish organization as a religion teacher. This was presented to her by Rev. Bollislav J. Zientek (before he became Msgr. Zientek). He was the parish priest at St. Eugene's Church at the time. He always enjoyed visiting with Sophie and Clarence and eating Sophie's home-cooked meals. Invariably, while eating, he'd make comments like, "OOoo Weee, UMMmm, Gee, that's good." Sophie was a very good cook and enjoyed making pastries and desserts. She and a friend cooked meals for the Rotary Club that met at the St. Eugene's parish hall. *************************** Sophie was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Mary Anna (Pustejovsky) Svacina; her paternal grandparents, Joseph and Aloisia (Dlabaja) Svacina; her maternal grandparents, Frank Josef and Anna (Hanzelka) Pustejovsky; a grandson, Daniel Paul Hartless ; and daughter-in-law, Virginia Ann (Leahey) Berger .
