Loma Gladney, 88, of West, went to be with her Lord and Savior on June 17, 2009, at a local hospital. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, June 20, at Waco Memorial Funeral Home. A visitation will be 1 p.m. prior to the service. Loma and her twin sister, Lora, were born in Purdon, Texas, to the late William D. Hughes and Lizzie Kennemore Hughes, with Loma being the eighth of 13 children. She lived and worked as a cosmetologist in Oxnard, Calif., where she met and married William Gladney in 1965. Following his retirement in 1971, from the Los Angeles Police department, they made their home in Waco. They owned a small pecan orchard and she later retired from WISD food services. She was a member of the order of Eastern Star #322 in Oxnard, Calif. for over 50 plus years. She and her husband Bill were active members of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. She enjoyed working in her yard, was an active member of several bowling leagues and was a long time member of the Heart of Texas Square and Round Dance Association. She was a very gentle, loving lady with a big heart and devoted much of her time caring for others. She was blessed during her last week on this earth to be able to attend a Hughes family reunion of 133 of her loved ones and to attend her great-grandson's high school graduation and recent baptism. She was also blessed to have attended the baptism of her great-granddaughter in the not too distant past. She was preceded in death by her husband; her son, Donald Sawyer; brothers, "Mack" Hughes, John Will Hughes, and Tommie Hughes; and sisters, Eunice Foster, Aileen Freeland, Anna Mae Jones, Mary Lou McPherson, Mildred Walker, and her twin, Lora Ford. She is survived by her grandson, Michael Sawyer; and great-grandchildren, Seith Sawyer and Tatianna Sawyer, all of Waco; brother, A.L. Hughes, of Waco; sisters, Joann Rodgers, of Baytown, and Elva Gladney, of Oxnard, Calif.; and numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews; and many other family members and friends.
