First Husband of Laura Olive Cottle
William Laney Long was the only son born to Andrew Jackson Long the elder. His mother's name was reported to be Sarah, but nothing more is known of her. Raised by his father, the two were very close. He married Laura Olive Cottle in 1883 and raised her four-year-old daughter as his own. Between them, they had six more children: five daughters (Sarah, Lydia, Mamie, & Willie) and one son (Andrew Jackson Long). Family lore maintains he was so surprised at the birth of his son after such a long line of girls that he wouldn't believe it until he saw the evidence during a changing session. When A.J. the elder heard the news of his grandson, he wrote a letter telling how proud he was of the boy, then proceeded to sign his full name. This was unusual, as he went almost exclusively by Jackson Long. Bill realized it was a request that the child be given his name and honored it. He came down with Typhoid Pneumonia in August, 1892 and passed away after a two-week illness. Though he only lived to age 30, he was a man ahead of his time. In an age when gender roles were strongly distinct, he helped his wife with the children and household work in addition to his responsibilities as a hunter and farmer. The deaths of the father to whom he was so close, and his three-year-old daughter Mamie are believed to have hastened his own demise. His mother-in-law, Lydia Dancer Cottle, was buried next to him the following year.
