Bio

Father Co E, 17th Regt Ala Inf Confederate States Army September 17, 1919 issue of "The LaFayette Sun": Death Of Mr. G. W. Ellington. Mr. George W. Ellington, an aged and highly esteemed citizen of Chambers County, died at his home near Gold Hill on Thursday of last week. Funeral services were conducted at the residence on Friday afternoon by Dr. W. C. Bledsoe, an old friend of the family, and for many years their pastor. Dr. Bledsoe preached the funeral sermon, after which Mr. J. H. Harris, who for a half century had been the neighbor and friends of the deceased, paid a fine tribute to his memory. The concluding prayer was made by Rev. E. B. Paul, the pastor of the Gold Hill Methodist Church. The choir consisted of Mrs. John Allen Jones, Miss Elizabeth Phillips and Messrs. R. L. Samford and H. F. Lowe, of Opelika, who beautifully sang selected hymns. After services at the home the body was taken to the Oakbowery cemetery, where interment was made. The pallbearers were the sons and sons-in-law of the deceased. A large company gathered to pay their tribute to the memory of this good man. Among those in attendance from Opelika were the following, making a procession of about thirty automobiles: W. E. Davis, H. A. Bedell, L. F. Dickson, D. S. Robertson, J. A. Jones, W. M. Pulliam, G. W. Faucett, J. M. Holloway and wife, R. A. Botsford, V. P. Cherry and wife, Winfield Williams, Homer Cherry, R. L. Wilson, Mrs. R. B. Barnes, Howell Cherry, Mrs. Baker Dean, Mrs. J. M. Burt, Mrs. W. A. Andrews, Mrs. W. F. Dickinson, Mrs. Crowder, Mrs. H. T. Sanders, Mrs. Winnie Harris, Mrs. J. S. N. Davis, Mrs. J. N. Cherry, Miss G. W. Cherry, Miss Mary Watts, and others. Mr. Ellington would have been 76 years of age had he lived to the 25th day of the coming October. He was born in Walton County, Georgia, and he had lived at his late residence for 42 years. He was married November 22, 1866 to Miss Mary Frances Burden. To this union were given nine children, who survive the deceased, namely: James E. Ellington, Opelika; Mrs. W. Z. East, Roanoke; C. E. Ellington, Gold Hill; Mrs. Lillie Belle Thompson, Harris County, Georgia; W. A. Ellington, Gold Hill; Mrs. D. S. Robinson, Gold Hill; J. B. and Robert A. Ellington, Gold Hill. He is also survived by two brothers - M. L. Ellington, of Autauga County, and Jesse Ellington, of Loachapoka. The deceased left twenty-one grandchildren. Mr. Ellington was a brave Confederate soldier, serving in Company E, Seventeenth Alabama regiment. Thus has passed away one of the best citizens of Chambers County. He was a Christian man from early life, a member of the Waverly Baptist Church, a most devoted husband and father, a man faithful to every call of duty, great-hearted, liberal, true and loyal, he won the love and esteem of his fellowmen.
