Vance was raised south of Burwell, where he attended Valley County District 56 Grade School. He graduated from Burwell High School in 1946. Vance was a partner with Richard Burnham in a feed store in Burwell for several years. In '48 and '49 he worked for the State of Nebraska Department of Roads. On December 10, 1950, Vance married Marjoria Burnham in Burwell and they moved west of town (where the current airport is now). In the '50's Vance drove a truck for Richard Burnham while continuing his farming operation. In 1961 Vance, Marj, and their family moved east of Burwell, where he resided until his death, expanding his current farming/ranching operation. Vance enjoyed deer hunting and road trips to look at the countryside. He was a member of the Ord Elks for 30 years. Vance rose early every morning to feed cattle. Tending to his crops and livestock was what he dearly loved. Vance looked forward to Sunday mornings when all his family gathered for Marj's chocolate chip cookies and coffee. His sons, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his greatest joy. The grandchildren spent many hours with Vance in his pickup and tractor. Vance is survived by his wife, Marjoria, three sons: Lee, Lex and his wife Deb, and Lin and his wife Nancy all of Burwell; one sister Doris Pishna and one aunt, Lois Pishna both of Burwell; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Rich and Marilyn Burnham of Burwell, and brother-in-law Sonny Erington of Seguin, TX; many nieces and nephews; and a host of neighbors and friends. Vance's ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren include: Matt and Jossi Jeffres and their children Brook, Drew, and Toni; Darci Jeffres of Allentown, PA; Seth Jeffres and Sarah Newbury; Gabe Jeffres and Ashley Thoene and their son Ethan; Mike, Todd, and Scott Jeffres; and Grant, Blake, and Shea Jeffres. Vance was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Lois Erington, nephew James Pishna, and brother-in-law, Louis Pishna. A Farmers Prayer I bow my head and pray, O God, With hands worn rough by toil. That you will ever guide my plow, Help cultivate my soil. Please send the sunshine and the rain And bless the seeds I sow, And give me strength from day to day That I may make them grow. Watch over my livestock and my barn, Each shed and every tree, Protect them from the wind and storm I pray, O God, of Thee. And bless my house and family My neighbor's home as well. Under each roof and in each heart, Let love and friendship dwell.
