Velma Genevieve Payne Wilson, the daughter of Noble and Laura Payne, was born on October 3, 1915 near Guide Rock, Nebraska. She passed away on April 30, 2009 at the Good Samaritan Society in Superior, Nebraska at the age of 93 years. Velma grew up on the family farm SW of Guide Rock, Nebraska with brother Albert and sister Opal. She attended school at District 36 in Webster County, Nebraska. Velma and Luther Wilson were married at Beloit, Kansas on September 6, 1933. Two sons, Ardean Alvin and Gerry Allen were born to this union. Velma and Luther operated their bakery in Guide Rock from 1933 to 1942, then moved to a farm north of Mankato, Kansas on the White Rock Creek until Luther's death on July 27, 1968. Velma was an Avon Representative in the Burr Oak area for 17 years. She moved to Grand Island, Nebraska after Luther's death where she worked at the Skagway Department Store. Velma moved to Superior in 1970 where she worked as a cook at North Ward and the Superior High School for 20 years. Velma was a member of the Burr Oak Methodist Church and belonged to a number of clubs. She enjoyed dancing, playing cards and socializing with her friends. She loved her family and enjoyed cooking for the students in the Superior schools. Preceding her in death were her beloved husband Luther; oldest son, Ardean; her parents; brother Albert and sister Opal Hoskins. Left to remember Velma are son Gerry and wife Carolyn of Grand Island, Nebraska; grandson, Kent Wilson and great granddaughter Elizabeth of Prairie Village, Kansas; granddaughter, Lynette Wilson Shultz and husband Jeff and three great granddaughters, Ann, Erin and Cady of Owasso, Oklahoma, Ardean's wife Louise of Sheridan, Wyoming and two nephews, Ronald Payne and Lindell Hoskins and their families; great great grandson Caelin Shultz; other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at 10:30 AM from the Megrue-Price Funeral Home Chapel in Superior, Nebraska with Melissa Wilt officiating. Recorded music selections of "How Great Thou Art," "Amazing Grace," and "The Dance" were played. Pallbearers were Walt Wilson, Gary Garman, Kent Wilson, Jeff Shultz and Mike Hoskins. Interment was in the Burr Oak Cemetery at Burr Oak, Kansas.
