MRS. Although advanced in years, Mrs. Menke was always active, and well able to care for her own needs until stricken with a cerebral hemorrhage on Nov. 12th, which with complications of old age, resulted in her demise. Elizabeth Schutte was born on Sept. 27, 1867 at St. Paul, near West Point, Iowa. She came to Nebraska in the early 1880's and was united in marriage to Theo Menke on Nov. 6, 1884 at Saint Stephens, the Rev. B. Kuppenbender officiating. The young couple settled first on a farm in Webster county but the following year moved to the "home place" southeast of St. Stephens. Here her husband passed to his eternal reward on Sept. 24, 1914. She moved to her present home in St. Stephens five years ago. Mrs. Menke, in her early years, endured the hardships of the pioneers of this vicinity who contributed so much to make this the thriving community it is. She had always been a hard working woman whose home and children were the center of her life and thoughts. She was a loving mother, friend and neighbor who will be sadly missed by all her knew her. She leaves to mourn her loss her five sons: Henry, Herman, George, Albert and Al, and one daughter, Mrs. Lena Ostdiek, all of this community, also 29 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and two sons, Bernard who died in infancy, and Lawrence who passed away in young manhood in 1932. One daughter, Johanna Schroer died in 1944. The deceased is also survived by one brother, Herman Schutte of Indianola, Nebr., two sisters: Mrs. Henry Bolte of Lawrence and Mrs. Otto Morfelt of West Point, Iowa. Two brothers, Theo and Henry Schutte and a sister, Mrs. Joe Lemke, preceded her in death. The Rev. B.J. Haskamp officiated at the High Mass of Requiem and commital services in the St. Stephens cemetery. Pallbearers were grandsons of the deceased: Arnold Schroer, Jerome Schroer, Vincent Menke, Adrian Menke, Elmer Menke, and Vernon Menke. Out of town relatives present at the final rites included: Mrs. Otto Mohrfeld and Clem of West Point, Ia., Henry Menke, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bentler of Houghton, Ia., Mr. and Mrs. Ben Menke of West Point, Ia. and Sgt.
