Bio

Phillip Vernon Joy was the son of Raleigh B. and Lizzie D. Joy. He married Sophia Morrison on 18 Aug 1942. Services were held June 1st at the First Baptist Church in Arnold at 10;30 a.m., with the Rev. Victor Karg officiating. He is survived by his five children: Etoris Swanson of North Platte, Calvin Joy of Arnold, Morris Joy of Arnold, Carol, Wing of Grand Island, and Larry Joy of Elwood; three granddaughters; three step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Reta Zimmerman of Dunning and Marjorie Monroe of Gothenburg; a brother, Alvin Joy of Grand Island; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sophia; his parents, Raleigh and Lizie Joy; one brother, Floyd; and a sister, Leta Nansel. Music was provided by Mrs. Wes Larreau and Mrs. Glen Weinman. Pallbearers were Don Brosius, Melyirj Joy, Bill Joy, Roland Joy, Steve Hunzeker, and Dale Monroe. Interment was in the Arnold Cemetery. Arnold Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Vernon Joy was born October 1, 1916 to Raleigh Joy and Lizzie Fablinger Joy at Gandy, Nebraska. After graduation from Logan County High School in 1933, Vernon worked on farms and ranches in the Alliance area. Later he worked for Pauline Morrison west of Arnold. On August 15,1942 he married Sophia Morrison Vernon and Sophia lived and worked on the Morrison farm for a time. During this time, their first child, Doris, was born. Later they moved to a farm near Lexington. Calvin was born while living there. They next moved to a farm 11 miles west of Arnold. Morris, Carol and Larry were born during this period. In 1957 they moved to a farm 5 1/2 miles southwest of Arnold, where they lived until 1975, when they moved to Arnold. Vernon continued to farm for a number of years while living in Arnold. He was a member of the Broken Bow Elks Lodge 1688.
