"Father, Son Drown in Florida Sunday" Murley Calvert and his 2 1/2 year old son, formerly of Robertsdale, drowned Sunday near their home in Bell Glades, Fla., while on an outing with the family on a boat. When the child fell overboard, the father jumped into the water and fought to save his son. Both were lost in the waters current. The body of the child has not as yet been found. The body of Mr. Calvert has been returned to Robertsdale for funeral services, plans for which have not as yet been announced. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J R Calvert of Robertsdale. The wife and mother of the child is the former Jean Willis of Bay Minette. "Last Rites are Held for Murley Calvert" Funeral services for Murley Calvert, 28, of Bell Glades, Florida, were held from the First Baptist Church on Thursday afternoon, May 4. The deceased is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Calvert of Robertsdale. He met with sudden death from drowning in a South Florida lake near his home early last week when he attempted to save his little son who fell overboard the boat from which the family was fishing. The body of the son has not been recoverd to date. Surviving the deceased are five sisters, three brothers, both parents, his wife and two children. Rev. T.E. Swearingen read the funeral rites at the church with Foley Mortuary directing burial in Silverhill Cemetery. The Baldwin Times, (Bay Minette, Alabama), Thu., May 11, 1950, p 6 The Palm Beach Post/ (West Palm Beach, Fla) Tue., May 2, 1950, p 2 [extract] : searchers were still hunting for the body of three year old Michael last night in the Rim Canal of Lake Okeechobee, who drowned with his father, Murley Calvert, 28, sheet metal worker, Sunday afternoon....... Calvert's body [Murley's] was recovered by Slim Corbett, manager of a fishing camp, and taken to Berry Funeral Home. The family lives at Osceola Labor Camp. *Another news article, dated 3 May 1950, /The Palm Beach Post/ (Florida), states more about the drowning of both Murley and son Michael. Murley's body was sent to Robertsdale and was being held until the child's body could be found. The article states of "surviving wife and mother Mrs. Jean Calvert, son Murley Calvert Jr. & daughter Diane Calvert". *Look at Jean's obituary below, and you will see the 'son' Mugsey Calvert. His name was Murley Euel Jr., nicknamed Mugsey. Daughter Diane White also is listed. Shows Jean's "brother Ben Willis", matching the above article stating she was the "former Jean Willis". Pensacola News Journal/, (Florida), Wed., March 28, 1990, p 2B "Whitehurst - Jean Francis Carr" Crestview -- Jean Francis Carr, 62, of Rt. 1, Box 142A, Holt, died Monday morning in a Pensacola hospital. Ms. Carr was a native of Bay Minette, Ala. and had resided in Okaloosa County since 1962. Survivors include: three sons, Ben Carr, Jonathan Carr, Mugsey Calvert, all of Holt; two daughters, Traci Carr of Holt, Diane White of Spanish Fort, Ala.; a sister, Helen Wilson of Mobile, Ala.; a brother, Ben Willis of Atlanta, Ga.; an aunt, Bennie Havard of Weeks Bay, Ala.; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, in the Whitehurst Funeral Home Chapel with Fr. James Lambert officiating.
