Bio

Charles Emmitt Duncan was born in Mason County, Texas to Louella Coleman McKelrey, 1856 Mississippi and M.L. Duncan, 1856 Mississippi. Four of the nine children born to the couple survived to adulthood. His siblings included: 1. Minnie Ella Duncan, b: 1879 in Lee County, Mississippi d: Unknown 2. (Charles Emmitt Duncan, b: May 9, 1884 in Kaufman County, Texas d: March 16, 1956 Nolan County, Texas) 3. Infant Duncan, b: May 9, 1884 in Kaufman County, Texas 4. Mary Ella Duncan Massey, b: September 1, 1886 in Texas d: April 2, 1972 in Howard County, Texas 5. Willie Duncan Beavers, b: September, 1893 in Mason County, Texas 6. Maggie Duncan, b: May, 1896 in Mason County, Texas Charles married Miss Mattie Ellen Cates on December 23, 1906 in Pontotoc, Mason County, Texas. They farmed in the Mason area and started their family there. During the 1920's they migrated north and settled in Howard County, Texas. They continued to farm in the early years of their marriage but Charles much preferred ranch work over farming, eventually spending all his time following rodeos and stock exhibitions. In March of 1956, at age seventy-one, he died of cardiovascular disease and was buried near his mother's grave in Salem Cemetery, Howard County, Texas. Among his survivors were his wife; his four children and their families; one sister and numerous nephews and nieces. Children born of his marriage to Mattie Ellen Cates were: Viola Frances Duncan Bates, (1907 - 1996) Vernon Emmitt Duncan , (1911 - 1985) M. L.
