Mattie Ellen Cates was the eighth child born to Matilda Ann Morrison , 1848 Missouri and William Thomas Cates , 1840 Missouri Her siblings were: 1. John Wesley Cates , b: 1864 (son of Wm. Thos and Martha Cavin Cates 1846-1864) 2. Sarah Cates, b: 1868 3. Mary Jane Cates , b: 1868 4. William Thomas Cates, Jr. , b: 1870 5. Francis Stanford Cates , b: 1872* 6. Esther Arnetta Cates , b: 1875 7. Joseph Arnett Cates , b: 1877 8. Sina-Rosa Ana Cates , b: 1880 9. Cora Frances Cates , b: 1883 10. (Mattie Ellen Cates) 11. Emma Bell Cates , b: 1887 12. Boston Avery Cates , b: 1891 She married Charles Emmitt Duncan on December 23, 1906 in Pontotoc, Mason County, Texas and they migrated to Howard County, Texas where she resided until her death on January 2, 1974. Four children were born of their union: Viola Frances Duncan Bates, (1907 - 1996) Vernon Emmitt Duncan , (1911 - 1985) M. L. Duncan , (1924 - 2009) Loma Jean Duncan Fields, (1926 - 2000) * According to a letter written by Mattie Ellen Cates, eight of the ten children born to Tom and Matilda Cates "lived to be grown". Francis Stanford may have been the child of one of Wm. Thomas' brothers. Any documented information about this family would be very welcome.
