Wife of John M. Amos Her obituary reads: Mrs. Burt Garris, 80 years of age, formerly Bess Amos, died on Tuesday evening, August 5, 1975 in the Jennie M. Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow, Custer County, Nebraska. Mrs. Garris suffered a stroke about one month ago in Omaha, Nebraska and she was hospitalized there until Thursday, when she was then transferred to the hospital in Broken Bow. Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 9, 1975 at 10:00 a.m. followed by burial in the rural Dry Valley cemetery west of Comstock, rural Custer County, Nebraska, near the old family home. Rev. Leslie North, Sargent, pastor of the United Methodist Church, officiated, with music by Merrile North, the soloist, and Dorothy Pointer, accompanist and organist. Pallbearers were Gerald Nelson, Daniel Marsh, Gale Marsh, Steve Amos, Randy Fry and John Shaw. Rhoad Funeral Home of Sargent, Nebraska, Donald Rhoad owner-operator, had charge of the funeral arrangements. Bessie Mae Brumbaugh, the daughter of Sarah and William Brumbaugh, she was born in Dry Valley (Custer County, Nebraska, north of Westerville, south of Sargent and south of Coburg and southwest of Comstock, note, pioneer neighborhood) on March 25, 1895 and departed this life August 5, 1975 at the age of 80 years. She was united in marriage to John Amos on October 25, 1909 and to his union, 17 children were born. John and Bessie lived all of their lives in the Comstock, Nebraska vicinity, until John passed away in December of 1953. In later life, Bessie and Burt Garris made their home in Republic, Washington and resided there for 4 years. They then returned to Comstock, Nebraska, where she remained for the rest of her life. She is survived by Burt, by 14 children, Garley Amos of Winnemucca, Nevada, Virgil Amos and Milford Amos of Fallon, Nevada, Karl Amos of Westwood, California, Hanford Amos of Brandon, Oregon, Maynard Amos of Camas Valley, Oregon, John Amos of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Kalso Amos of Comstock, Nebraska, Sarah Husted of Fall City, Oregon, Becky Marsh of Comstock, Nebraska, Evalyn Garris of Scottsbluff, Midgie Nelson also of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Bonnie Plumb of Omaha, Nebraska and Arvilla Amos of Council Bluffs, Iowa; 39 great-grandchildren. Bessie was preceded in death by her mother, father and by 3 sons, Brice, Gaylord and Guy, and 4 grandchildren. She was a kind & loving mother and thoughtful friend to all. She opened her arms to those who needed her.
