Dorothy Ann Pittman Carter Funeral for Dorothy Ann Pittman Carter, 82, Gillette, Wyo., will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Matthew's Catholic Church, Gillette, Wyo., with the Rev. Philip Vaske officiating. Mrs. Carter died Friday, March 6, 2009. Burial will be in Gillette-Mt. Pisgah Cemetery under direction of Gillette Memorial Chapel. She was born Sept. 17, 1926, near Lawton, to Tuck and Anna Poiry Pittman. She attended a one-room schoolhouse with her siblings and graduated from St. Mary's Catholic High School, and Cameron State Agricultural College (now Cameron University). While working for a commanding officer at Fort Sill, she married Herbert A. Carter in 1950, in Lawton. They lived in several towns and communities across West Texas: Stamford, Pampa, Andrews, Monahans, Midland, Odessa, and eventually Houston. In 1970, the family moved to Casper, Wyo., and in 1975 to Gillette, Wyoming. She wrote historical columns about Gillette for The News Record, and in 1978, the family opened Powder River Office Supply. She created scholarships for local graduates, and was a leading supporter and fundraiser for Gillette College. The Herbert A. and Dorothy A. Pittman Carter Health Science Education Center at Gillette College was dedicated in the fall of 2008. She was a volunteer in and financial supporter in Gillette. She created the Powder River Symphony, and was honored as one of the Pearls of the Prairie. She was also honored as one of Ten Who Made a Difference in 1990. Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law: Michael and Martha, San Antonio; Patrick and Karen, Marble Falls, Texas; and Daniel and Linda, Oak Harbor, Wash.; daughters and sons-in-law: Mary Carter, Castle Rock, Colo.; Louise Carter-King and Steven, Gillette; Ann Carter and Robert Rose, Cheyenne, Wyo.; and Samantha and Kendall Glover, Claire Carter, and Nicholas Carter, all of Gillette; 16 grandchildren: Sarah, Will, Rachel, Jessica, Tanner, Casey, Richard, Amanda, Christina, Elizabeth, Benjamin, Abby, Alex, Tatyana, Gene, and Jack; great-grandchildren: Hannah, Brooke, and Jonathan; a brother, Alfred Pittman; a niece, Glenda Turner, Lawton; and many other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, seven siblings, and her parents. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gillette College.
