Bio

Nicholas "Nick" Didier Nicholas "Nick" Didier, 68, lifelong resident of the Black Hills, died Friday, Mar. 1, 1997, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Nick was born Aug. 24, 1928, in White River to Nicholas John and Nell (Spear) Didier. He received his elementary education in White River and in 1942 moved with his family to Rapid City where he completed his education and graduated from City High School in 1946. Nick married Evelyn Beach on Sept. 10, 1949. Their reception was held in the ballroom of the Hotel Alex Johnson. Three children were born to this union of 47 years. After attending National College of Business, Nick enlisted in the South Dakota National Guard, where he was employed at Camp Rapid and retired as a captain in the U.S. Army Reserve. In 1950, he was employed by Black Hills Power and Light as a district manager in the Sturgis and Hot Springs offices and returned to Rapid City in 1965 as the company's sales manager. Nick was active in numerous civic and community activities. He was a charter member, past director and president of the Sturgis Jaycees, as well as past state director. He was a recipient of the Jaycee Distinguished Service Award. He was a charter member of Toastmasters and a former secretary treasurer of the Black Hills Boy Scout Council. He served on the board of the American Red Cross and was a past chairman of the advisory committee of the Southern Hills General Hospital in Hot Springs. In 1972, Nick and two other businessmen bought the Tip Top Motel, which Nick managed until 1966. He was active in the Rapid City and South Dakota Hospitality Associations, being a past state president. He was one of the initial directors of the Rapid City Convention Visitors Bureau, served on the board of the Rapid City Chamber of Commerce, and was a member of the Mount Rushmore Society and Black Hills and Badlands and Lakes Association. In the early 1980s, he was instrumental in forming a group to purchase the Hotel Alex Johnson. After the untimely death of his son, Tom, in 1993, Nick and Evelyn assumed ownership of the hotel. He has participated in the South Dakota Family Business Initiatives through the University of South Dakota. Nick and Evelyn were major benefactors to the Black Hills Children's Home. Their support of the South Dakota School of Mines Foundation has established endowments which will support programs that foster business communications with technology to further the development of industry in this region. Nick was an avid golfer. Those grateful to have shared his life are his wife; a son and his wife; a daughter and her husband; three grandchildren; five sisters; one brother and his wife; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Tom; his parents; two sisters. Marie Krogman and Leona Veilleux; and one brother, John. Visitation will be from 3 p.m.to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home, with a Christian wake service at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 5, at Blessed Sacrament Church, with the Rev.
