He became active in several real estate and development companies and agreed to become managing partner when a group of family and friends purchased Hotel Alex Johnson in 1985. In 1986 he bought out his partners and became sole owner and general manager of the hotel. In the years that followed, he worked on remodeling the hotel from top to bottom, having special period furniture, carpet and coverings made to match the original decor of the 1928 vintage hotel. His greatest dream was to restore the hotel, as much as was practical, to its original new 1928 condition. Tom was named Boss of the Year in 1991. He was very active in, and president of the Downtown Association, as well as active in many activities while living in Colorado Springs. In 1992 he received the Governor's Great Service Award and the Abex "Achievement Business Excellence" award.
