Bio

The Mountain Democrat, Placerville, California, June 5, 1947. "V. H. Hamilton, 68, Camino orchardist, member of the board of directors of El Dorado Irrigation District and a leader in church affairs in his home community, died early Friday at the family home of an apparent heart seizure. Mr. Hamilton had not been in the best of health within recent years and friends report that he had been cautioned against undertaking vigorous exercise. After his passing it was recalled that he had been irrigating in his orchard Thursday and during the process had dug a small ditch and it was suggested that the exertions of the day may possibly have over-taxed his heart. Vinton Harvey Hamilton was a native of Stanhope, Iowa, born on November 17, 1878. He attended Union College and also Lincoln Normal University, where he took a course in teacher training. In 1900 he located at Longmont, Colorado, where he was for sixteen years a successful farmer. He and Mrs. Hamilton were wed in 1905, she being the former Winne Belle Caldwell, of Arvada, Colorado. About 1916 Mr. Hamilton gave up his active farming to become manager for the Farmers' Grain Elevator and Supply Company in Longmont and the next year planned and supervised the erection of a six story flour mill of which he became general manager. In the same year he helped organize the Farmers' Bank of Longmont and became president of the institution. This was followed by substantial business expansion including the establishment of a Farmers' Exchange in Denver, which named Mr. Hamilton as its president. In behalf of these various institutions, Mr. Hamilton traveled in Canada, Mexico and in every state of the United States except two and made many friends, some of whom urged him to enter politics and in response to their persuasions he was a candidate for United States Senator in Colorado. About 1919 he purchased a half-section of rich land in the vicinity of Sterling, Colorado, and invested heavily in the development of the area, losing substantially in the agricultural reverses of 1921, selling his home and moving to California in May of 1921. For a short time Mr. Hamilton was employed by the Michigan-California Lumber Company and in 1922 leased the John Winter's orchard and the year following moved to the William Vohles ranch which he developed and for many years leased. In 1923 he purchased a forty acre tract of timber, cleared the acre and planted it to pears and apples. Mr. Hamilton has been a co-operative Weather Bureau observer for twenty years and during his twenty-six years in the county has been an active member of the Farm Bureau and has co-operated with the University and the Agricultural Extension Service in studies connected with fruit growing. In the early 1930s he accepted an appointment from the United States District Court as federal debt adjustment conciliation commissioner in El Dorado County and during the war years he was chairman of the county War Board committee on agriculture and a member of the War Food production committee. He served during 1945 and 1946 as chairman of the county AAA committee. In 1936 he became a member of the S.D.A. church at Camino and had served that institution continuously since that time as auditor. Mr. Hamilton was beloved by his family as a devoted husband and father and respected by his neighbors and friends as one of the substantial citizens of the community. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Winne Bell Hamilton, and by three children, Mrs. Pearl Larsen, Mrs. Irene Larsen and Glen Hamilton, and by six grandchildren, all of Camino. He was the brother of Mrs. Estelle Nelson, of Staples, Minn., Elmer Hamilton, of Scotts Bluff, Neb.; Wright Hamilton, of Mitchell, Neb.; and Earnest Hamilton, of Camino. Mr. and Mrs. Haskell Caldwell, relatives more distantly removed, had been here visiting from Colorado and, following Mr. Hamilton's passing announced they will remain here with the family for an indefinite period. Among other relatives here to attend the last rites were Deo Reavis and Miss Mable Reavis, of St. Helena; Mr. and Mrs. Haskell, of Pasadena; Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Quast, of Willows; and Mr. and Mrs. Howard Nelson, of Angels Camp."
