Sat., May 15, 1947. pg. 1 Excerpt -- Death claimed the life of Roy Keener of Pruntytown, one-time famous baseball pitcher with the Chicago Cubs in the National League, at 12:45 o'clock this morning in the Myer's Clinic at Philippi. Mr. Keener had been in ill health for the past year, but his death came unexpectedly, shocking his friends. A life long resident of Taylor County, Mr. Keener was an employee of the Hazel Atlas Glass factory for a number of years. He retired about two years ago. The former baseball player started his athletic career at Morris Harvey College, which at the time was located at Barberton. He played ball at Fairmont, Cumberland, Md., Spokane, Washington, Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Chicago where he was once a pitcher for the Chicago Cubs. He was a member of the Methodist church. A son of John A. Keener, who survives, and the late Maggie Rogers Keener, he was born in Taylor County on April 24, 1881. His wife, Ada M. Roe Keener, and two sons, Joseph LeRoy and John Keener of Grafton, survive. Other surviving relatives include a brother, J. Ray Keener of Rt. 3 Grafton and a sister, Mrs. Pearl Gawthrop of Pruntytown. Another sister, Mrs. Bessie Davis, passed away a year ago. Last Rites Held For Roy Keener This Afternoon. May 15, 1947. pg. 6 Excerpt -- Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock this afternoon for Roy Keener of Pruntytown, who died Saturday morning in Myer's Clinic at Philippi following a year's illness. Services were held from the Baptist Chruch at Pruntytown with the Rev. G. S. Wadsworth and the Rev. D. L. Whitener officiating. Burial was made in the Woodsdale Cemetery, under the direction of the Bartlett Funeral Home. Mr. Keener, a one-time famous baseball pitcher with the Chicago Cubs in the National League, was a life-long resident of this county. He is survived by his wife, Ada M. Roe Keener, and two sons, Joseph LeRoy Keener of Clarksburg, and John Keener of Grafton. A brother, J. Ray Keener of Rt. 3 Grafton, a sister, Mrs. Pearle Gawthrop of Pruntytown, and a granddaughter, Carol Lea Keener, also survive.
