Garden County News (Oshkosh, Nebraska), Sep. 20, 1956, Page 1 Mrs. Matilda Maud Newton whose maiden name was Gillan of Scotch-Irish descent, was born July 3, 1869 at Toulon, Stark Co., Illinois, and died in Oshkosh, Nebraska, September 11, 1956 at the age of 87 years two months and eight days in New, Year's Day of 1953 she fell and broke her hip. She never recovered from this tragic injury and had been hospitalized at Lewellen and in Oshkosh .for the past three years and eight months. At an early age she moved with her parents to Osceola Polk county, Nebraska. From Osceola they moved near Monroe in Platte county. Nearly seventy years ago or February 22, 1887, she was married to Charles E. Newton. Their early married lives were spent in Eastern Nebraska where their three sons and five daughters were born. In the Spring of 109 [sic] they moved to Deuel county, Nebraska, and settled on a homestead southwest of Lewellen. Soon after moving to the homestead, Deuel County was divided and their home was then in Garden County. They lived on the homestead for the next twenty-six years. The farm is now owned by A. C. Pickenpaugh, who resides there. In 1935 they moved to Lewellen, where she resided until her death, excepting for a few years when, she lived with her sister in Omaha. Mrs. Newton was preceded in death by her husband, Charles in October of 1940, a daughter, Alice May who died in childhood, and her eldest son, Roy, who died in St. Edward in June of 1955, and Ralph of Lewellen, who died in February of 1941. She is survived by Harry of Lewellen, Mrs. Ethel Wymore of Red Cloud, Mrs. Alta Smith of Oshkosh, Mrs. Lora Sowder of Denver, Colorado, and Mrs. Ila Jacobs of Oshkosh. She is further survived by 26 grandchildren; fifty-one great-grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. Very few women have ever lived to have fifty one great grandchildren. Mrs. Newton has been in the Methodist church since early life and transferred to the membership of the Lewellen Methodist church February 16, 1913 under the pastorate of Rev. J. F. McAbee. She loved her church which she regularly attended until the time of her injury. Attending the funeral from out of town included Mrs. Stanley Wymore, Red Cloud; Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Gillan and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Smith and Mrs. Elwin Sowder, Julesburg; Mrs. Ernest Anderson, Lincoln; Mr. and Mrs. Gene Sowder, Loveland; Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Sowder and Mrs. Don Ralph, Denver; Mrs. Lyle Taylor and Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Shepherd, Chappell; Mr. and Mrs. Ben Sitmh [sic] and Mr. and Mrs. Duane Smith and Mr. and Mrs. Leo Jacobs and son, Oshkosh. * * * Management taken over from FAG on 6 Feb 2022
