Son of William Adress Spicer and his wife, Mary Ann Murphy. Layle was very young when his family moved to Monmouth. Layle carried on the occupation of his father, that of a gunsmith, as well as a painter. For a period of ten years, Layle worked as a civilian gun inspector of the Army Ordinance Department, and traveled extensively. Layle married Corine Fraser in Aledo, Mercer county, Illinois on 15 October 1926. He was survived by his wife; daughters Mrs. Raymond (Frances) Gillette and Mrs. Gerald (Mary Lou) Byron, both of Monmouth, and son Paul Spicer, of Iowa City, Iowa; eight grandchildren; two brothers, Vern T. Spicer of Monmouth, and George D. Spicer of St. Petersburg, Florida.
