GOLDIE MAE EWING WILSON BIGSBY Goldie died Monday April 3, 2006 at Northfield Villa Medical Center at the age of 99. Services were held at the Central Church of Christ in Gering with Lyle Hinebauch and Howard Roseberry officiating. Goldie was born on Dec. 16, 1906 to Emerson and Daisy (Scott) Ewing In 1910 when Goldie was 3 years old they moved to Carter Canyon where they homesteaded. She received her education in a one room school house at the top of Carter Hill. She graduated from Gering High School in 1924 while living with relatives in Gering. She got her teaching certificate and was hired to teach at a one room school house in Banner School. She soon after met her husband Elmer M. Wilson and they were married in November of 1926. In 1927 they moved to his homestead in Yoder, Wyoming. She was the third generation of her family to be a homesteader. Her grandparents had come to Western Nebraska in 1887 and took to home steading in the Ribideaux area. In 1928 they returned to Banner county where she taught in the Harrisburg school district grade school for 5 years. In 1934 she stopped teaching to start a family. Elmer was a mechanic at Bridgeport and Morrill. In 1942 during WW II - schools were begging for teachers and Goldie got her temporary certificate to teach in Western Nebraska. She was the sold provider for her two daughters. She went to night classes and graduated from Chadron State College – Cum laude. She taught school again for 36 years. The last 14 were in Lincoln Grade School in Gering. She had previously taught in Gering Valley, Carter Canyon, Cedar Valley and Dome Rock. Goldie inherited the home ranch when her Mother passed in 1965. She combined ranching and teaching until 1972. Elmer died in 1974. She married Rupert Bigsby in March of 1976 and he died in July of 1996. Goldie became a member of the 1st Christian Church which later became the Central Church of Christ. While she was baptized in high school. She taught the U & I Sunday School class for 30 years. Played the piano for church and Sunday School and sang in the choir. She was elected honoroary Vice President of Oregon Trail Days in 1985 and honorary Vice President of the Half Century Club in 1969. She was a member of: · Pioneer Birthday Club · Carter Canyon Project Club · Retired Teachers of Banner County · North Platte Valley Museum · Twin City Credit Union Board for 13 years And several others Her hobbies included writing, photography, scrapbooking, memorizing poetry and entertaining others. She had a magnetic personality and was a joy to be around. Survivors: Daughters and Sons-in-law: Mary Jo and Roy Schaneman of Gering Martha Jean and James O'Connor of Bakersfield, Ca Sister Hazel Dutton Seven Grandchildren, Thirteen Great Grandchildren, Two Great Great Grandchildren, three nieces and fours nephews as well as many friends and family to remember he smile. She was preceded in death by both husbands, parents, brothers – Marvin and Myron Ewing.
