Services for George Curtis Hilliard, 85, Canton, were held Thursday, February 4, at First United Methodist Church, Canton, with Rev. W.C Hall officiating. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery, Canton, under direction of Hilliard Funeral Home, Van. Mr. Hilliard died February 2, 1999, in a Tyler hospital. He was born August 21, 1913 in Canton and was a life-long resident. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Canton. He was a merchant, owner of Hilliard Furniture and Appliance. He was a licensed funeral director, mortician and embalmer for 65 years. He was a member of Castillian Lodge No. 141, the Eastern Star, and a former alderman on the city council of Canton. He retired from Canton Fire Department, where he served for more than 35 years. He was Man of the Year in 1985, and former director of First National Bank of Canton. He was preceded in death by his wife, Cathaleen Green Hilliard, Canton; sons and daughters-in-law, James Curtis and Madelon Hilliard, Canton, Mike and Debbi Hilliard, Irving; daughters and sons-in-law, Joanna and Billy Hudson, Susan and Ronnie Roberts and Mary Lynn and Jimmy Baugh, all of Canton; brother, Bryan Hilliard, Van; sister, Annie Laurie Teal, Nacodoches; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers included Butch Hilliard, Chuck Hilliard, Tom Teal, Keith Hilliard, Bill Hilliard, Dr. Dan Hilliard, Dr. Joe Hoot and Cary Hilliard. Van Zandt News, Sunday, February 7, 1999, page 8A
