Bio

Horace Bryan Hilliard Services for Bryan Hilliard are scheduled for 3:00 p.m., Saturday, June 5, 2010 at Hilliard Funeral Home with Rev. Shelby Davidson, Rev. Mike Calhoun and Dr. John E. Hitt officiating. Burial will be in Fairway Garden of Memories Cemetery. Mr. Hilliard passed away at the age of 88 on June 3, 2010 in Tyler. Horace Bryan Hilliard was born November 14, 1921 to the late Samuel Foster Hilliard, Sr. and Mary Eleanor Bryan Hilliard. He was born and raised in Canton, and was the third generation of family to be a part of Hilliard Funeral Home, established in 1896. He worked his first funeral service in 1938 at the age of 17. He also worked at the hardware store in Canton and continued to help on services until he went to college in Arlington and then left for WWII, where he served in the US Army Air Corps. In 1945 he returned from the war, at which time he and his brothers ran the funeral home and hardware store in Canton. He married Maxine Venable in 1948, and they moved to Van in 1951, at which time they started the ambulance service and opened Hilliard Hardware. He commuted back and forth to Canton to help at the funeral home whenever needed. In 1960, Hilliard Funeral Home opened in Van, where he has poured his heart and soul, and spent every day since. He served on the Canton VFD from 1945-1950, and Van VFD from 1951 until present, serving as fire chief and secretary in earlier years. Among many honors, he was awarded: Man of the Year in Van in the 70's, a 32nd Degree Mason of the Colfax Lodge, Funeral Director of the Year in 2005, and he and Maxine were awarded Man and Woman of Yesteryear in the late 90's. He was very proud of his 50 years of Service in Funeral Directing and the Business of the Year in 2010 awards. He has continued to stay active in the community, serving on the Van Economic Development Committee, board of Van Housing Authority, and the C.C. Moore Scholarship board. He was a very hard worker and had a great sense of humor. It was in his nature to help people, and he put in many long hours and sacrificed much to do so. He was preceded in death by his parents, Foster and Eleanor Hilliard; two brothers and two sisters, Frances Hilliard, Curtis Hilliard, Sam Hilliard, and Annie Laurie Teal; and his old buddies, Dr. W.J. Garrett and J.W. Ward. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Maxine Hilliard; daughter, Sherran Hilliard; son and daughter-in-law, Keith & Sharon Hilliard; grandchildren, Shelly Pickett, Melissa Rust and husband Brandon, and Brook Hilliard and wife Abby; and four great-grandchildren, Sydney & Aly Pickett and Canon & Foster Rust. He was lucky to have all of his family live and work by his side in Van. Family will serve as pallbearers, and the great-grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers to honor his legacy. The members of Van VFD will serve as honor guards.
