Russell "Peck" Leavines Services for Russell "Peck" Leavines will be held at 2p.m. Tuesday, October 25, 2011, in Gardner Baptist Church, with Dr. Carlton Winbury, Rev. Jack Holt and Rev. B.G. Dyess officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Baptist Cemetery, Gardner under the direction of John Kramer & Son. Visitation will be Monday, October 24, 2011, from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. and from 9 a.m. Tuesday until the time of the service at the church. Mr. Leavines, 94, passed away October 22, 2011, in his home. He was born December 3, 1916 to Thomas and Nannie Leavines. He was a lifelong resident of Gardner. Mr. Peck, as he was known, actively worked in Louisiana's logging industry from age 15 to age 84, logging west of the Red River in Central Louisiana from Natchitoches south to Oberlin. In 1996, he was recognized by both Martin Lumber Company and Hunt Plywood Company for "dedicated and outstanding logging service." That same year the Louisiana State Senate made him an Honorary State Senator for his contributions to logging in Louisiana. On August 28, 1996, Peck was awarded the first Lifetime Achievement Award for contributions of a lifetime to the Louisiana logging industry, by the Louisiana Logging Council. He was inducted into the Louisiana Loggers Hall of Fame in 2009. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Willie Richey Leavines, daughter, Shirley Leavines Holt, parents, Thomas and Nannie Leavines, brothers, Robert, Burt and Tom Leavines, sisters, Elizabeth Lewis, Ella McKinney and Onie Miller and granddaughter-in-law, Kathy Holt. Survivors include his wife, Betty Leavines, son-in-law, Gwynn Holt, grandchildren, Russell Holt and Gwendolyn Holt, great grandchildren, Amy Brown and her husband, Kyle, Jamie Holt and his wife, ReBecca and John Holt and great great- grandchildren, Natalie Faye Holt, Cooper Augustus Brown, Bailee Kathryn Holt, Sawyer Russell Brown and Kathryn Louise Brown. Pallbearers will be Jamie Holt, John Holt, Kyle Brown, Roy West, George Ramsey, Richard Crowell, Mike Walters and Robert Sweat.
