Bio

Alice O'Neal, age 97, died on July 3, 2008 in Houston. Alice was born in Nevada, Texas on July 24, 1910, the daughter of Robert and Emma McClendon. She was raised on the family farm along with four bothers and three sisters. Alice finished high school as the class Valedictorian and earned a scholarship to attend Wesley College in Greenville. Later she attended East Texas State in Commerce to further her education. There she met her beloved Hal O'Neal and they were married on October 6, 1929. They operated O'Neal's Paint and Hardware Store, a mainstay on the square in Commerce for over 50 years, until Hal's death.Alice was involved in numerous religious and civic organizations in Commerce, along with being an active member of First Methodist Church. She was extremely energetic in The Order of Eastern Star in the Commerce Chapter, for over 50 years, where she served as Worthy Matron and all other positions in the Chapter as well as positions in the statewide organization. Alice was active in the Woman's Society of Christian Service, the Daughters of American Revolution, the Texas State Federations of Woman's Club, the Delphian Club, and the Alumnae Association of Alpha Delta Pi. She worked on numerous annual City wide Charity drives.After living in Commerce for 75 years, Alice moved to Houston in 2003 to live at the Forum, so she could be closer to her immediate family. Alice was a thoughtful, caring person and an inspiration to all who knew and loved her. She was truly deserving of the long and happy life in which she was so blessed.Alice was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her brothers Sam, Linus and Pierce McClendon and sisters Naomi O'Neal, Foy Attaway, and Onela Florence. Alice is survived by her two sons, Dr. George O'Neal and his wife Elna of Mt. Pleasant and Bob H. O'Neal and his wife Dianne of Houston. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Candye Spears, Susanne O'Neal, Allison Reemsnyder, George A. O'Neal, and Robert C. O'Neal and nine great grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother T.G. McClendon and wife Lila of Corsicana.Pallbearers will be George A. O'Neal, Robert O'Neal, Bruce Reemsynder, and Harry O'Neil. Visitation will be on Sunday July 6 from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. at Jones-Walker and Son Funeral Home 1209 Live Oak Street in Commerce. Memorial Services will be held Monday July 7 at 1 p.m. at the Jones-Watson Funeral Home in Commerce followed by burial in Rosemound Cemetery. Published in the Herald-Banner on 7/6/2008.
