Pierce Ward McClendon, 99, of Waco and formerly of Dawson, Dallas and Nevada, Texas, passed away Saturday, May 17, 2008 in Waco. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. on today at the funeral home.Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, 2008, at Wade Funeral Chapel in Hubbard with his grandson, Pastor Jeff Bianchi, officiating. Interment will follow in Dawson Cemetery. Pierce was born Dec. 27, 1908, in Nevada, Texas, to Robert Abraham and Emma Delia McClendon. He grew up in Collin County on the family farm with seven siblings. Pierce attended East Texas State College in Commerce and then taught sixth through eighth grade in Millwood. He married Gladys Evelyn Beene on Dec. 10, 1932 and was married 66 years when she preceded him in death. During the Depression, Pierce was recommended by Congressman Sam Rayburn for postal work in Dallas. He was a postman in Highland Park/University Park and downtown Dallas. He was a member of St. John's Methodist Church of Dallas and also was a member and secretary of the Dallas Lodge #44 IOOF. After retiring from postal work, Pierce and Gladys moved to Corsicana where he served as IOOF Grand Secretary for ten years from 1970-80. In 1980, at age 72, he began farming/ranching in Dawson and retired at age 87. He was active in the First United Methodist Church of Dawson. Pierce was a fun-loving, happy family man who loved to tell jokes and stories about the good ole days, sing songs to his grandchildren and bowl with his league friends and grandchildren. Besides his wife, Pierce was also preceded in death by five siblings, Naomi O'Neal, Foy Attaway, Onella Austin, Linus McClendon and Sam McClendon. Survivors include his sister, Alice O'Neal of Houston; brother, T.G. McClendon and Lila of Corsicana; son, Dayle Ward McClendon and Beverly of Hubbard; daughters, Mary Sue Allen and Paul from San Antonio and Emma Bianchi and Ted of Waco; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.Memorials may be made to Community of Faith Int., 410 Washington Street, Brighton, MA 02135 where his grandson, Jeff Bianchi is associate pastor.Arrangements by Wade Funeral Home, Hubbard.
