Bio
Thomas "Tom" Gideon McClendon, Sr., 96, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, October 4, 2016, at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Saturday, October 8, 2016, at Corley Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Sunday, October 9, 2016, at First United Methodist Church in Corsicana with Dr. Steven Bell officiating. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park. Tom was born in Nevada, Texas, to the late Robert Abram McClendon and Emma Wilcoxson McClendon. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942, serving in World War II in the Mediterranean as Chief Motor Machinist on a LST. Upon discharge from the Navy, he worked for the United States Postal Service in Dallas, Texas. Then, in 1950, he moved to El Paso, Texas, to join the United States Border Patrol. During his 40 years in El Paso, he became a successful businessman and owner of Tom’s Auto Supply. In his retirement, he moved to Dawson, Texas and went back to his childhood farming roots, raising cattle and horses. Tom was an avid fisherman and loved spending time at the home he built on Lake Amistad in Del Rio, Texas. He had a passion for cars and restored many classics over the years and often used them for traveling around the United States. He lived life to the fullest. He was devoted to his family and delighted in entertaining his grandchildren with his many "toys" as they grew up. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Corsicana where he led the singing in his Sunday School class for many years. Tom was preceded in death by his siblings: Linus McClendon, Naomi O’Neal, Pierce McClendon, Alice O’Neal, Sam McClendon, Onella Florence, and Foy Attaway. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Lila Lee McClendon; children: Thomas McClendon, Jr. and wife, Pat, Billinelle Currie, Olon McClendon and wife, Donna, David McClendon and wife, Teresa, and Scott McClendon; grandchildren, Danny McClendon and wife, Patricia, Karen Currie, Brandon Bradley and wife, Chris, Nicole McClendon, Michael Currie and wife, Beth, Letecia McClendon, Madalee House, Kerri McClendon, Imelda McClendon, Becky Sullivan and Alicia McClendon; 14 great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
