Bio

Florence Mae Duffek died peacefully in her sleep Saturday, February 8th. Born July 26, 1930 in Seward, NE, Florence lost both her parents at a young age with her mother, Mildred Conway Zeleny, dying when she was two and her father, Bohumil Zeleny, dying when she was seven. As a child, Florence moved throughout Nebraska, Wyoming, and South Dakota as various aunts and uncles had a hand in raising her. Her high school years were spent in Seward, NE, where she met her future husband, Norbert Duffek. Florence began her secondary education at Duchesne College from 1948-1949. At the time, Duchesne was a 4-year women's college in Omaha, NE. She left Duchesne to marry her high school sweetheart, Norbert, on October 8, 1949, and together they raised their four children in Nebraska before moving to Grand Junction CO in 1961. In addition to welcoming two more children to the family while in CO, Florence returned to school and began a career in nursing. This became a lifelong passion that fulfilled her desire to continually learn and grow. Her nursing career focused primarily on surgical nursing but also included a great interest in ophthalmology and orthopedics. In addition to her traditional nursing roles, she loved her work with Doctors Beyond Borders and the many medical mission trips to small mountainous villages in Mexico. In 1971, Norb and Florence moved their family to Wyoming where she remained until 2024. Florence is survived by her six children, Catherine, William, Fabian, Thomas, Daniel and Rebecca; 10 grandchildren, and her 8 great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are pending and will occur in Jacksonville, FL, where Norbert and Florence will be laid to rest together at the Jacksonville National Cemetery. A Mass in her memory will be said at 5:00PM, Monday, February 24, 2025, at St. Paul's Newman Center in Laramie. Florence's quick wit, tenacious spirit, her love for clothes and theater, and her unmatched collections of Santas, spoons, and teacups will be missed by all. Legacy.com Feb 22, 2025
