WALTER LEE YATES COMMERCE — Walter Lee Yates, 91, of Commerce died Oct. 19, 2007, at his home. Funeral services were at 2 p.m., Oct. 22, 2007 at Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home with Brother Terry Bryan officiating. Burial followed in Rosemound Cemetery. Born April 28, 1916, in Brashear, he was the son of Ruben Allen and Bessie Elsie Mae Vaughn Yates. Walter served in the Army Air Corps as a sergeant during World War II. He served two years in Puerto Rico and the remainder in Washington, D.C. He was discharged from the Army Air Corps from Andrews Field in Washington, D.C.; and upon returning to Commerce, Walter and his older brother, Willie Yates, farmed until the mid 1980s. Walter bought a farm about 1951 just outside of Commerce and still lived there at the time of his death. He remained active his entire life. Walter is survived by nephews and nieces Joann Carroll of Abilene, Troy and Marlys Newman of McKinney, Wayne and Brenda Keenum of Plainview, William Loyd Newman of Mesquite and John and Judy Newman of Mesquite. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, William Allen Yates and Charles Loyd Yates; three sisters, Ruby Ona Yates, Cuba Jean Yates and Sadie Keenum.
