Bio

Gary Alan Schutza passed away on November 16, 2024. He was born on November 22, 1931, in Waco, Texas to Charles and Ethel (Deggs) Schutza. He attended school in Ross and then graduated from West High School in1950. He joined the US Marine Corp in September of 1950 and was sent to Korea with the First Engineering Battalion of the First Marine Division in April of 1951. As a demolition man with Dog Company on a mine patrol, he detonated a land mine and was wounded. He spent 121 days on a hospital ship. After another month on the front lines, he was rotated back to the states and received an honorable discharge in September of 1953. Gary received many military medals and awards including The Purple Heart, Good Conduct, National Defense, Korean Service with 4 Battle Stars, United Nations Service, Korean War Medal, Korean Presidential Citation, US Marine Corp Commemorative Medal, Cold War Medal and the Combat Action Ribbon. After returning from Korea, Gary resided in West and worked at his dad's grocery store and Mobil gas station. In December of 1954, he married Georgia Ann Trcalek. They moved to Irving and Gary started his education in the electronics industry. He attended the Texas School of Technology in Dallas for two years on the GI Bill. He then went to work as an Electronic Tech at Varo Mfg. Company. In 1957, he was hired at Texas Instruments as a Senior Electronics Technician. While at T.I., he continued his education and took a three-year correspondence course at Capitol Radio Engineering Institute in Chicago. In 1970, he attended El Centro College at night to obtain his real estate broker's license. He and a friend then opened a real estate office in Richardson. In 1976, Gary went back into the electronics industry and retired from Rockwell International in 1991. In 1993 Gary married Peggy (Otto) Altus of Allen. After his retirement, Gary enjoyed speaking to school students about being a military veteran and what an honor it was to serve his country. He also wrote short stories and articles about his experiences in the Korean War which was known as the "Forgotten War". These stories were published in various military magazines and local newspapers. He wrote a war manuscript that was accepted, recorded, and preserved in the archives of the Veterans History Project at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Gary is a life member of the VFW, DAV, Military Order of the Purple Heart, and a member of the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor. Gary is survived by his wife Peggy, his children Chip Schutza, Curtis Schutza (Mary), his granddaughter Jill Christine and stepchildren Pamala MacRae (Mac), Brian Altus, Jill Loftice (Randy), and Audra Barrett (John). He was preceded in death by his brother Dennie Schutza, and his daughter Debra Lynn Draper. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, November 29, 2024 at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home in Allen, Texas. Interment will be held at 1:00 p.m. following the service at Dallas-Ft. Worth National Cemetery. The family will receive guests for a visitation one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
