Mary Ann Smith, 89, of Fremont, NE, passed away, Tuesday, October 29, 2024, at Franciscan Healthcare in West Point, NE. She was born July 22, 1935, in Linwood, NE, to Anton and Mary (Navrkal) Fiala. She moved to Fremont and worked at AT&T for nearly 40 years as a machine operator. She never took a sick day in all her years working, which was a feat and spoke to her character. Mary Ann loved gardening, especially tomatoes and cucumbers. She was always looking for a special deal by bargain hunting, going to garage sales, thrift sales, and auctions. Mary Ann enjoyed playing cards with her friends and in her younger days she loved dancing. Old school country music was her favorite. She listened to her favorites, Conway Twitty, Merle Haggard, George Jones, and Waylon Jennings. Mary Ann was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Fremont. Mary Ann is survived by her sons, Shawn (Heidi) Smith of Nebraska City, NE, Jeff (Tracey) Herre of Fremont, and Kevin (Donna) Herre of Syracuse, Utah; brother, George (Anna) Fiala of Exeter, CA; multiple grandchildren; great grandchildren; and great great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Greg Herre; daughter, Cheryl Herre; and sister, Margeret Groteluschen. The family will be receiving friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Friday, November 15, 2024, at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont.
