Ronald E. Bengston, 74, of Waterloo, died Friday, August 2, 2024 at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo. He was born October 14, 1949 in Waterloo, the son of George W. Jr. and Beverly A. Close Bengston. He married ---- Youngblut on Jan. 9, 1971 in Jesup, Iowa. Ron graduated from Orange High School in 1968. He joined the U.S. Navy and honorably served our country during the Vietnam War, and then with the Waterloo U.S.Navy Reserve Center until 1994. He was employed as a printing press operator with Controlofax, retiring in 1998. He then worked as a groundskeeper at UNI, retiring in 2010. Ron was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, Amvets, V.F.W. and the American Legion. He was a Scout Leader for Troop 116, Winnebago Council for 25 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Gerald; and two nephews, Michael Bengston and Nicholas Schares. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 7 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. The Iowa Patriot Guard Riders will escort the family to the cemetery where full military rites will be conducted by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard and the American Legion Becker Chapman Post 138 and VFW Post 1623. Public visitation will be from 4 until 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6 at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 4 pm rosary and a 6:30 pm vigil service. Visitation will continue for one hour before services at the church on Wednesday.
