Bio

Eugene William "Gene" Kohout was born to William Theodore and Rose Jennie Goblish Kohout, on 4 June 1950, in Redwood Falls, Redwood County, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed at Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Bechyn. Gene graduated from Danube High School in 1968. He got his diesel mechanic degree, in 1970, from Willmar Vo-Tech. From 15 October 1970, to 14 April 1972, Gene served in Vietnam with the United States Army. When he returned home, he joined the National Guard, and served for many years. Gene began farming with his dad and uncle, Milo Kohout. He was very active with the Bechyn Czech Fest, and took part in many parades, where he drove the barrel train that he made. He manufactured many metal plant holders and other metal crafts. Gene put up tents and rented picnic tables for various events in the area. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Renville County Historical Society. Gene enjoyed playing cards and decorating the church for holidays and events. He was a song leader for many years, sang in the church choir, and sang for community events. Eugene William "Gene" Kohout, of Bechyn, passed away unexpectedly in his home, at the age of 74, on Tuesday, 16 July 2024, in Renville County, Minnesota. Gene was survived by his siblings: Judy (Steve) Rien of Annandale, Karen (Melvin) Piekarski of Little Falls, Shirley Kohout of Missoula, Montana, Marsha Fluck of Redwood Falls, Mike (Phyllis) Kohout of Redwood Falls, Renee (Dennis) Cash of Atwater, John (Colleen) Kohout of Olivia, Joan (Jim) Ryan of Miltona, Larry (Liz) Kohout of Redwood Falls and Laurie (Joe) Scherer of Missoula, Montana; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; the Worship Committee at Saint Catherine's Catholic Church; many other relatives and friends; and, his close friends throughout the Bechyn area. Gene was preceded in death by his parents; many aunts and uncles; and brothers-in-law, Butch Fluck and Steven Goelz. Mass of Christian Burial was held, on 19 July 2024, at St. Catherine Catholic Church in Redwood Falls, Redwood County, Minnesota, with a livestream on the church's YouTube page. Following the mass, burial was at Saint Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Bechyn, Renville County, Minnesota.
