Daily Post Athenian July 20, 2001 William A. "Bill" Scarbrough, 80, of Athens, died Friday, July 20, 2001, in Knoxville. A native of Polk County, he was a son of the late William Oscar and Annabelle McDowell Scarbrough and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Athens. He was associated with The Daily Post-Athenian for 31 years as a press operator and with the McMinn County Board of Education for 21 years as a school bus driver until his retirement. A member of the VFW, he served in the U.S. Army, 36th Infantry Division in Germany during World War II, was awarded the Purple Heart and was a life-member of the disabled veterans. Survivors include his wife, Mary S. Strickland Scarbrough of Athens; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Russell King of Athens and Susan and David Lauver of Knoxville; one son and daughter-in-law, Max and Juanita Scarbrough of Athens; two granddaughters, Renee Hunter and Mary Emily Lauver; three grandsons, Rodney Scarbrough, Chris Walker and Will Lauver; five great-grandchildren; and three brothers, George and Charles S. Scarbrough, both of Oak Ridge, and Blaine Scarbrough of Ohio. Funeral services were 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Jerry Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Ansell T. Baker officiating. Burial was in McMinn Memory Gardens. Pallbearers were Russell King, Chris Walker, Rodney Scarbrough, Derek Hunter, Jerry Trotter and Sam Stephens. The body was in state at the funeral home after 11 a.m. Sunday where the family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, East Tennessee Region, 519 East 4th St., Chattanooga, TN 37403. Jerry Smith Funeral Home of Athens is serving the family of William A. "Bill" Scarbrough.
