Bio

Marvin Mark Bernt, age 87, of Shelby, Nebraska, passed away May 11, 2024 at his home in Shelby. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 15, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Vincent's Catholic Church in Osceola with Father Thomas Au officiating. Musical selections will be "Be Not Afraid", "Only A Shadow", "Christ, Be Our Light", and "On Eagle's Wings." Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 14 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. followed by a 7:00 p.m. Rosary at the church. Pallbearers will be Jeff DeGarmo, Matthew DeGarmo, Jordan DeGarmo, Trevor Bogle, Bob Zelasney and Derek Blumenthal. Honorary pallbearers will be the grandchildren and great grandchildren. Interment will be in St. Andrew's Cemetery. Marvin was born February 3, 1937 in Columbus, to Hubert and Paulina (Weiser) Bernt. He attended country school District 68 through the 8th grade. He grew up on a farm near Osceola and farmed all his life. On April 28, 1962 he was united in marriage to Doris Louise Oehme at St. Francis Center near David City. To this union three children were born. He farmed on the family farm until his mother's death and then worked for the Max Hennings family and the Billie Kumpf family. For 23 years they maintained both of the St. Andrews cemeteries west of their home. He was a member of St. Mary's Pilzno. He enjoyed gardening, watching westerns on TV and watching Husker sports. He especially enjoyed spoiling his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Survivors include his wife Doris of Shelby; children: Mark (Kim) Bernt of Kimball, Lisa (Rob) Spitz of Columbus and Amy (John) Hartsock of Lincoln; 12 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren; brother Albin Bernt of Norfolk; two sisters Elaine Burritt and Iona Hastings, both of Lincoln; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert and Paulina Bernt; sisters Marcella Zelasney, Dolores Korger, Irene Kubas, Huberta Schaf; brother Willie Bernt; sister-in-law Betty Bernt; brothers-in-law Allen Zelasney, Bernard Korger, Marion Kubas, Bernard Schaf, Ralph Burritt and Virgil Hastings.
