Bio

James Harvey Fleming, 91, of Liberty, MS went to be with the Lord on Friday, April 26, 2024 at St. Dominic hospital with his family by his side. He was born on January 24, 1933 to Enoch & Clara Edwards Fleming, of Liberty. James was a veteran of the US navy serving during the Korean War. James was a lifelong member of Zion Hill Baptist Church where he was ordained as a deacon. He attended Mt. Olive Baptist Church for many years where he enjoyed the men's Sunday School class. He was an avid gardener who loved to share his surplus of vegetables. He had a great love for the game of baseball and coached many years of little league. In the late 1960's, James owned and ran The Rebel Grill café in Liberty. He started at Mabry Lumber Company in 1970 then later worked at Liberty Lumber until retirement. He loved his family and enjoyed visits with his numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a great example of a loving Christian husband, father, & grandfather. He had the best smile and enjoyed visiting every Sunday at church. James is preceded in death by his parents, brother Edward Fleming, and sisters: Laverne DeBlanc, Mildred Aaron, & Jane Hester. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, JoAnn Whittington Fleming; and 5 children, David & Tracy Oglesby, Jeanne O. & Tim Wroten, Jane O. & Hugh Laird, Joel & Katie Fleming, and Jonathan & Angel Fleming. He was "Pops" to 13 grandchildren: Haleigh W. & Ryan Cowart, Eric & Haley Swarts, Elizabeth O. & Bobby Buntyn, Chance Wroten, Mary Katherine Oglesby, Eli & Kaylan Swarts, Dakotah F. & Sean Roe, Todd Partridge, Kyla Fleming, Jyles Fleming, Liza Jane Laird, Riley Fleming, and Charleigh Kate Fleming; 7 great-grandchildren: Branch, Oakleigh, Brazos, & Loxleigh Cowart, Grant Swarts, and Charlotte & Samuel Swarts. He had one surviving brother, Elton Fleming and wife Jeannie, and numerous nieces & nephews. Pallbearers are grandsons, Chance Wroten, Eric Swarts, Eli Swarts, Jyles Fleming, Todd Patridge, Sean Roe, Ryan Cowart, and Branch Cowart. Visitation is Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at Mt. Olive Church in Smithdale, Mississippi, from 1:00 P.M. until time of funeral services at 3:00 P.M. Tuesday, at the church, officiated by Rev. Eric Moak.
