Born the daughter of George Mercer Salter (1859 – 1920) and Mary Lucy Love Salter (1866 – 1962) in Navarro County, Texas. As a child her parents moved from Navarro County to Mercer County which was being opened to settlers for development. She remembered living in a "soddy" or underground house and traveling in a horse-drawn wagon. In her last years her favorite television show was "Wagon Train" and she remarked that it was almost identical to how she traveled with her family to West Texas as a child and just as difficult a life. She met her future husband, Harvey Surestus Wade (1884-1980) at a Gospel Singing Convention in Chatfield, Navarro County. Mr. Wade was a singing teacher at many singing conventions throughout East Texas. On 15 March 1918 she married Mr. Wade and they had three children, Ellis Whitfield Wade (1919 – 1990), Lanell Wade (1921 – 1994) and Roland Truman Wade (1928 – 2009). She was a member of the Gilmer Missionary Baptist Church and prior to that to the East Mountain Baptist Church with her husband.
