John William Tyler, Jr. son of John William Tyler, Sr., who was one of the pioneer ministers of Macon county, and Elvira Oxley, was born in Macon county on a farm five miles east of Decatur, March 4, 1830. His early boyhood was spent on the farm, and at fourteen years of age, he came to Decatur to learn the trade of saddler, in which business he afterward engaged. On Dec 5, 1860, he married Rebecca Ellen Hanks of Decatur, and they spent many years in this city and vicinity, moving to Indianapolis in 1908. On Dec 5, 1920 they celebrated their 60th wedding aniversary. While Mr. and Mrs. Tyler had no children of their own, through their love and tender regard for children they became foster parents of five and six who needed the care of a father and mother. The last of those is Miss Mattie Calhoun, their niece. Mr. Tyler is survived by his wife, Rebecca E. Tyler, his nephew, T. M Tyler, of Indianapolis, his sister, Mrs. Nancy June Housley of Docatur, two half brothers, Rev. J. Z. Tyler of Richmond, Va., and Charles Tyler of Chicago, and four half sisters, Mrs. Sue Odor and Mrs. J. A. Meriweather of Decatur; Mrs Betty Cool, of Oregon and Miss Alice Tyler of Cleveland, Ohio. The late Rev. B. B. Tyler of Florida, also was a half brother. Decatur, IL Review June 12, 1922 p17
