Bio

Garvin Eugene "G.E." Mooney, aged 91, of Palestine, Texas, peacefully entered his heavenly home on December 30, 2023. Born on November 27, 1932, in Etoile, TX, Garvin was the youngest of Ben Curtis Mooney and Bertie Atkinson Mooney's seven children. Preceding him in eternal rest were his parents and each of his siblings: Dorothy Mooney Miley, Buford "Son" Mooney, Mattie Mooney Cherry, Maxine Mooney Davidson, Rdell "Sissie" Mooney, and Gerald Mooney, as well as his precious granddaughter, Xemina Allison Edge. Garvin was raised in Etoile and Lufkin, TX. At the age of 19, he enlisted in the United States Army on January 16, 1952. Serving with pride as a Corporal in Company K of the 27th Infantry "Wolfhounds" Regiment, he often recounted tales of his experiences in the Korean War. Recognized for his dedication, he earned accolades including the Combat Infantryman Badge, Korean Service Medal with 3 bronze service stars, National Defense Service Medal, UN Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. Post-military life brought Garvin back to Lufkin, where he met and married Shirley Bradley. Together, they raised and loved a beautiful family of five children. Garvin's professional journey included years at the Lufkin Foundry, followed by a career as a self-employed remodeling contractor until his retirement. In his leisure moments, Garvin found joy in fishing, playing 42 dominoes and checkers, watching westerns, listening to country music, and playing the harmonica and guitar. He appreciated life's simple pleasures, he loved a good joke and a laugh, and the company of a roaring fire and good old dog by his side. Garvin is survived by his children and their spouses: Melanie Mooney, Michael Mooney and Nancy, Lisa Edge and Victor, Julie Looney and Kyle, and Regina Minton and Robert. His legacy extends further through grandchildren Johnathan Lovell and Nicole, Matthew Mooney and Sally, Roman Looney and Beverly, Shane Matthews, Amanda Herbrough and Mitchell, Ryan Mooney, Caitlin Garner, Ashley Weaver and Kenneth, Lindsey Brown and Travis, William Looney, Emily Fletcher and Kyle, and Daniel Garner. As well as numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other extended family. Honorary pallbearers will be Garvin's grandsons; Johnathan Lovell, Matthew Mooney, Roman Looney, Ryan Mooney, William Looney, Daniel Garner, and great-nephew Christopher Cherry. A graveside service will take place on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. in Etoile, Texas, at Blue Springs Cemetery, 19270 FM 226, under the care of Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors of Nacogdoches.
